London's iconic Trafalgar Square will come alive with celebrations for Eid-ul-Fitr.
Backed by the Mayor of London, the annual Eid in the Square festival has become an eagerly anticipated fixture in London’s events calendar, attracting large crowds.
The free event will include a variety of exciting performances that reflect the diversity, culture and languages of the varied Muslim communities in London. It is an open invitation to everyone in the city – Muslim and non-Muslim alike - to experience the richness, vibrancy, depth and variety of Islamic heritage.
The main stage will feature live folk music, rock bands, a children's choir and theatrical performances.
The programme will also showcase Nasheed (from the Arabic word Anasheed) - artists that draw musical inspiration from history, religion and current affairs. Although traditionally this genre was sung capella or accompanied by percussion instruments only, the new generation of Nasheed artists use a variety of musical instruments in their art. Nasheeds are sung in many languages, including Arabic, Turkish and English.
There will also be exhibitions of art and culture, including interactive activities for the whole family, stalls selling souvenirs and food outlets where visitors can sample traditional, mouth watering festive food.
Eid in the Square is organised by the Mayor of London with the support of an EID community committee, Lycamobile and Zee TV, which is the media partner for the event.
Eid in the Square, Trafalgar Square, London on Saturday 24 September 2011 from 2pm. This event is free.
