A teenager has admitted stabbing his stepfather to death in a row over a television.
Moynul Haque, 18, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mohammed Zillur-Rahman, 43, an imam at Chadwell Heath mosque, east London.
He was remanded in custody at the Old Bailey to be sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on March 22.
Haque was 17 in October last year when the dispute broke out at the family home in Melford Avenue, Barking.
Philip Bennetts QC, prosecuting, said Mr Zillur-Rahman died after being stabbed through the heart.
He said: “There was an argument over a television being moved by Moynul Haque into his bedroom.”
A fight broke out and Haque went to the kitchen where he picked up a knife and stabbed Mr Zillur-Rahman after a struggle.
Haque was said to be shocked and crying. He said: “What did I do?”
Mr Bennetts said relations between the two had been strained in the previous year and Haque appeared to have been asked to leave in the summer.
In a statement to police, Haque said his stepfather had tried to hit him with a curtain pole.
Haque said: “He was so angry. I ran into the kitchen and picked up a knife to prevent my father assaulting me. He came after me and I saw him collapse. I was acting in self-defence.”
