The Drum in association with Half Moon presents Guantanamo Boy.

Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Anna Perera, this unique production integrates contemporary visual media to present the question of human rights to audience like never before.

Khalid is like any other teenager – he loves football, hip hop and computer games, and has a huge crush on a girl at school.

But being a young Muslim in the aftermath of 9/11 can be very dangerous.

Snatched in the middle of the night in conditions beyond his control, he is presumed guilty and thrown into a nightmare world. Alone, afraid and far from home, will he have the strength to survive?

While a fictional story, Guantanamo Boy is based on the accounts of real-life Guantanamo Bay detainees.

This powerful and immersive production places the audience in the centre of the action, locking them within a cage as the story unfolds before them.

The setting creates a special atmosphere for both cast and audience alike, taking them to the heart of the ‘war on terror’ seen through the eyes of one boy.

“Guantanamo Boy asks difficult questions” says director Dominic Hingorani, “Questions about how we balance human rights and national security – and what happens if we get that balance wrong.”

Experience Khalid’s journey from innocence to prisoner - www.findkhalid.com allows audiences to interact with Guantanamo Boy’s story, learning about the political context of Khalid’s detention, and featuring insight from Human Rights advocates such as Amnesty International and the Human Rights Lawyers Association.
