Maureen ORMEROD [nee Topping]
ORMEROD [nee Topping] Maureen Maureen Ormerod [nee Topping], 85 long time resident of South Porcupine, passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2023 at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie. Maureen was born on January 17th, 1938 to John Topping and Mary Topping [nee Howden] in Romford, England. After leaving Blackburn High School for Girls in 1956, she went on to complete studies in nursing at The Preston Nurses' Training School in 1960. After graduation, she began her nursing career at Royal Preston Infirmary where she met Brian. Maureen and Brian wed in 1966, shortly before immigrating to Canada. They arrived in Canada on March 26 of that year, settling first in Biggar, Saskatchewan then Bracebridge, Ontario and finally in South Porcupine, Ontario. Between these moves the pair had two children John Robinson (Robin) and Peter Scott (Scott). After having her first child, she dedicated her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Maureen excelled at nurturing and supporting both Robin and Scott through the many passions and pitfalls in their lives. Maureen was an active member of the community, splitting her time over the years between the St. Paul's Auxiliary and the Kinette Club of the Porcupine, where she received a Life Membership in 1984. Maureen was always filling her home with love and kindness while also spreading that same caring and attention in her garden at 86 Smith Avenue, where she could be seen diligently tending her many plants. Once her children had reached a certain age, Maureen returned to the workforce as the administrator to Dr. Ormerod's medical practice in South Porcupine. She was a constant presence at the practice for many years and greeted all who passed through the door with a kind word and smile. We will miss her greatly. Maureen was predeceased by her father, John and mother Mary Topping. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Brian Ormerod; sons Robin Ormerod and Scott Ormerod; grandchildren Jack & Katie Barber-Ormerod, and Peter Ormerod; cousins, Irene Auld [nee Kay] and Ronald Kay, and their families; sister-in-law Maureen Rotherham [nee Ormerod], and her husband Bill and daughters Andrea Statter & Lynne Hutchinson and their families. Donations in Maureen's memory may be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Daffodil Lodge, Sudbury. The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to Stinson Funeral Home. There will be a Luncheon and Celebration of Life on January 20th from 1:00-3:00 pm at the Airport Hotel in South Porcupine.
