It a regular occurrence - we get irate and call for resignations over certain issues whilst casually ignoring other worldly affairs.
This week, a picture showing schoolkids allegedly from a major Education Trust were seen holding up Israeli flags. We had many users on WhatsApp and social media quick to share the picture and call for the school, which is based on an Islamic ethos, to explain why children were holding Israeli flags.
The shock and the horror did not stop there. Some shared the images without pixelating the faces. Clearly, the kids did not know what they were holding up and may have been taking part in a flags day.
We have no idea when the image was taken and if it was in fact a Star Academies school. Or if the image had been doctored in any way.
The Trust was contacted for comment by this site to clarify the authenticity of the image, but have yet to reply.
Yet, this whole episode did not surprise me. We are insistent on sharing anti-Israeli or anti-Indian content. We do it without a second thought. To me, this is guaranteed to rile people up. To me this is an easy sell.
I have no issue with whether people wish to raise the Palestinian or Kashmir cause and speak out against injustice. These are causes we should all support.
Yet, we do not have the same level of concerns when a nation is killing people indiscriminately. The reason for this, is that we do not want to hold other Muslims to account. In particular, we do not want to put ‘wealthy Muslims’ to account.
For many years, the Saudi-led military intervention into Yemen’s civil war, backed by western powers has led to the biggest humanitarian disaster in modern times.
Elsewhere, we are embarrassed to call out Muslim groups in case others think we are 'anti-Islamic' or a 'sell out'.
But there are no marches. There are no demonstrations. There are no WhatsApps posts calling for us to speak to our MP’s. We do nothing. It does not concern us because the perpetrator is a Muslim.
In fact, we will share posts about how those very nations are doing ‘some wonderful work for the Islamic Ummah’ and helping to spread the word of Islam.
All very well but at the same should we also not share the shameful incidents when fellow Muslims are killing children? The same could be said for the nation of Iran which is in turn is using Yemen as a testing ground for its arsenal of Soviet made weapons.
Yet, these geopolitical issues are of no real relevance. None of this matters.
We want to call out people for being Islamophobes, yet privately use language to insult other religions.
We are concerned about whether some Instagrammer should be wearing make up and a headscarf at the same time. We ponder if KFC really is halal or if we can have a cake with the holy Prophet’s (PBUH) name on it.
That should appease our guilt and get us the necessary likes, shares and comments.
