A MAN who suffered a ‘temporary loss of control’ before he killed a woman with an axe has been jailed for 13 years.

‘Kind and sweet’ Ishrat Ahmed died after she was killed in the doorway of her home by Mohammed Yaqub Malik following a family dispute.

At the start of January Malik was cleared of murder but found guilty of Mrs Ahmed’s manslaughter.

During a trial which lasted several weeks, Preston Crown Court heard how Malik had attacked Ishrat and her husband Afaq Ahmed in the doorway of their home in July of last year.

Ishrat, 52, suffered serious head injuries and died later in hospital.

Afaq was also taken to hospital suffering serious brain injuries but has since recovered.

Prosecutors told the jury how Malik had driven to the couple’s home on Roberts Street in Nelson looking for their son Wasim, who had been married to one of his daughters.

The couple had split acrimoniously and there were ongoing disputes between the pair, of which Malik was aware.

Following the attack Malik drove back to his home where he was arrested a short time later. The weapon was found by police hidden in the back garden.

Throughout proceedings, the court heard how Malik had suffered a ‘temporary loss of control’ in the lead up to the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Allen Davies, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said: “Ishrat Ahmed was killed in the most brutal fashion and her husband seriously injured at the hands of Mohammed Malik, who had driven to their home address armed with an axe and who proceeded to carry out an attack of savage ferocity. 

“My thoughts today remain with the Ahmed family who have behaved with incredible dignity through this court process. I hope that today’s sentence gives them some sense that justice has been served and that they can continue with their lives.”
