Kabaddi sports stars and power lifters are set to take centre stage at a mela event next month in Blackburn.
The Blackburn Kabaddi Mela (festival) is set to return following a three-year absence and will take place on throughout the day on Sunday, July 17, at Pleasington Playing Fields.
In previous years, thousands of fans have turned out to watch an array of sports popular in Pakistan and India.
The event will include kabaddi, horse racing, volleyball, tent pegging and power lifting with food and beverage stalls.
In kabaddi, points are scored for each player tagged by the ‘raider’, who runs into the opposing team's half of a court to touch as many of their people as possible, and then return to his own half of the court.
Tent pegging is an equestrian sport where mounted horseman gallop, pick up and carry away a small ground target.
The mela has attracted an array of horse shows in the past.
Asif Mahmud is helping to organise the event alongside a group of volunteers.
He said: ‘We always aim to attract families to have a day out and enjoy the sporting fun packed events.
"It is a not-for-profit event and organised by community volunteers. As many people in Blackburn have a South Asian heritage. It’s important we celebrate their heritage by holding this annual event.
"The horse shows and kabaddi always draw large crowds."
Anyone wishing to support the event or volunteer their time can email blackburnkabaddimela@gmail.com or find further information on their Facebook page.
