While I was never good at taking anyone's advice I had to see for myself why so many people kept mentioning the legendary Barakats to me all time.
What was it about this average looking Grill Steak House based on St Helen's Road, Bolton that seemed to have everyone talking.
I was told not only by locals but by many people from around the region what a wonderful place this was and how I must visit it on my travels.
I was greeted by the owner Hanif who seemed the most modest chap I had ever met.
So modest he didn't even want his picture taken.
It was about the food he told me. We are not one's who want to show off.' Hey, you had to be impressed.
Barakats wasn't always a takeaway. The owner used to own a trailer in the town but as his food became more popular over the years he eventually opened a takeaway.
It was Friday and the place was heaving and with me were two of the region's finest defenders, Kalim Hafeji and Mohammed Ansar.
The menu was functional and didn't leave much to the imagination. Many of the dishes would set you back four pound upwards.
We ordered steak and chips, the chicken and chips and the steak mix.
Whilst my food is being made I tend to want to muse round the kitchens to get a real feel for the place.
The hospitable staff were more than willing to tell me how they cooked the food and what they used.
There were young and old customers of all backgrounds. Also funnily enough there was an atmosphere in the place. One that I had never felt anywhere for a long time.
Had I come across one of the greats?
The food soon proved me right. It was mind-blowing.
I could finally see why so many people kept coming back to this place. I met one man from Dewsbury and another from Preston.
Barakats Steaks are surely one of the best I have ever had.
Do try the Mix Steak and Chicken. It is £6 but I would have paid double for it.
It was so filling I never even looked at the dessert menu.
Now, the owner may not want publicity' but with food like this my dear Sir I'm afraid you don't really have a choice.
