A trio of charities have banded together to buy a bladder scanner for the Rosemere Cancer Centre’s in-patient ward.
The scanner, which arrived on the ward last month, was requested by matron Danielle Jackson for the Ribblesdale Ward, which is part of the Rosemere Cancer Centre’s in patient ward in Preston.
She said: “We frequently have patients that have acute and chronic urinary dysfunction because of their cancer and require a bladder scan to determine the volume of fluid in their bladder.
“Depending on the volume, patients may need catheterising to empty the bladder to alleviate pain and discomfort. This needs to be done in a timely manner for patients’ health. There are bladder scanners at the Royal Preston Hospital but it means a member of the Ribblesdale staff having to leave the ward to locate one.
This means patients can suffer for a longer period than necessary, which is why it is important to us to have our own scanner.”
Approximately half of its £7,990.90 cost (£3,350) was jointly donated by the Rhodi Charitable Trust and the HVM Foundation with Rosemere Cancer Foundation putting up the rest.
Dan Hill, chief officer of Rosemere Cancer Foundation, said: “We are very grateful to the Rhodi Charitable Trust and the HVM Foundation for their support on this project.
“Danielle was determined to get a Ribblesdale Ward bladder scanner for her patients. Her only option was to come via us as unfortunately, having access to scanners, albeit ones that could be in use in other parts of the hospital, meant it fell outside NHS remit.
"Thanks to the help of the Rhodi Charitable Trust and HVM Foundation, we’ve now been able to buy one exclusively for Ribblesdale Ward.”
Habibullah Munshi from the Rhodi Charitable Trust and The HVM Foundation said: “Rhodi Charitable Trust and The HVM Foundation aim to provide support to various good causes. Supporting local charities and causes is particularly important to us.
"As such, we are delighted to work in partnership with Rosemere Cancer Foundation to fund this much needed bladder scanner for exclusive use at the Ribblesdale Ward.
"We are pleased that our contribution will provide some respite to patients that have acute and chronic urinary dysfunction because of their cancer.”
Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre, the region’s specialist cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre at the Royal Preston Hospital, and also at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties.
